This is not the most fancy book, but a great book written by two serious educators with a wealth of experience in Chinese learning and teaching. One is a French who is in charge of the Chinese education in France who speaks fluent Chinese and the other an experienced teacher who teaches at the Beijing Culture and Language Institute - one of the best language training institutions in China.

The book teachers all aspects of Chinese with special focus on learning characters. It contains 400 most used characters, which make up 66% of modern printed materials, and a total vocabulary list of 1600, a quarter of which you should master.

Flashcards for book 1

Compiled by our school for students using this book based on the new words in each lesson. On one side is the word in character, and on the other side are the pinyin, meaning, and lesson number. Printed on A4 thick paper, you need to cut them out yourself. A total of 25 A4 sheets with 18 words per sheet or total of about 450 words.

This is not your usual travel phrase book, but designed for complete beginners who want to learn to speak some basic phrases. "Less is more" is the idea. It is not overladen with long list of vocabulary but contains only essentials phrases with a lot of pattern repetition. The phrases averaged 5, 6 syllables, making it simple enough for beginners to master.

It is in pinyin with English translation. Should all communications fail, simply point to the Chinese characters!

An excellent Chinese-English, English-Chinese dictionary. Simple and clear explanation of words and grammar with nothing to confuse the beginners. Extras include table of measure words, basic Chinese writing, etc. (As with most dictionary, stroke number for the characters are not indicated which we find a pity). It is a dictionary we highly recommend for beginners.

An excellent multimedia magazine launched recently by Commercial Press targeting at learning of Chinese worldwide. Beside language related games, exercises and articles of much interest to Chinese language learners, this magazine provides a lot of interesting cultural information for anyone interested in Chinese culture. Articles are in Chinese and English with a few items also in pinyin.

Included with the magazine is a CD rom with a lot of multimedia items. It is beautifully produced and is a joy to read even when you are not learning Chinese.

Pimsleur language courses are based on scientific research and is a unique method of learning solely by listening and repeating. No pinyin or character recognition is necessary. The course is in English and each lesson is 30 minutes in length. Total audio courses have their shortcomings but this is certainly the most effective audio programme available. Anyone who do not has time to learn pinyin and characters will find course extremely good. Others who are learning to read pinyin and characters will benefit from knowing an effective way to learn.

"The First Chinese-learning Multimedia Software in the World"

This self-study course is more interesting then many other courses and certainly has many interesting features, for example, you can choose to see all pinyin, characters and english, or just any of the three. You can also record your own voice and listen to it. But it is no revolution in Chinese learning and it has many of the problems common with Chinese courses, namely too comprehensive, long sentences and long list of new words (28 new words in lesson 1 which consist of 3 separate texts)

There are 62 lessons with lots of exercises and tests. Altogether more than 5000 words are included, up to the intermediate level of the HSK test.

If you do not have a chance to go to a school and intend to learn reading besides speaking, this is a good option provided that you are a serious student with a lot of discipline.

HSK list of 2063 characaters. Front - character in outline with stroke-sequence numbering and pinyin. Back - translation and several words starting with the character. Format: 25 characters per page, printed on slightly thick paper with perforation ready to be torn out.
